I have such a treat for you today! Recently, I was given the opportunity to review this great cookbook. It is filled with recipes and memories passed down from Southern grandmothers. The recipes are fabulous, and it's so neat to be able to glimpse into these amazing women's lives. The author, Faye Porter, does a fabulous job capturing the love and guidance so many of us have experienced with our grandmothers, and yes, probably in their kitchens. There are so many tempting recipes, but my favorite and the first one I am going to try is the Red Velvet Cake recipe on page 198. It looks so authentic, and has the real Red Velvet Frosting - the one made with milk that is cooked. Don't get me wrong, I like cream cheese frosting, but that's not how my mom makes her Red Velvet Cake, and I have been searching for a recipe like this! I will let you know how it turns out!
The other recipe I can't wait to try out is the Blueberry Pancakes. You will find it below on page 21.

Don't they sound delish? You absolutely cannot go wrong with Blueberry Pancakes! While your flipping through to get to the Blueberry Pancakes, take a minute to look at all the other yumminess {Patsy's Chocolate Chip Pancakes, and Sausage Biscuits} you will find, and remember, this is just the preview! There's so much more packed into this delightful book like, Nanny's Coconut Cake, Blackberry Fried Pies, and of course, Grandmother's Deep-Fat-Fried Chicken.
As if it could get better, they have offered a copy for one of my readers! All you have to do is leave a comment telling me about a memory or favorite recipe you have with your grandma!

The winner of the Jessie Steele Apron was, Mary, who said, "Wow!!! I'm glad I found you...I wear an apron everyday in my house.I am a facebook follower too. I love the Vintage Kitchen Ava Apron."

My favorite memory is with my grandmother. We would make something called Hungarian Palacinta, it is a very sweet filled crepe. She was born and raised in Hungary and has handed down numerous recipes to me mostly baked goods. And since I love to bake I cherish these vintage recipes. I have now handed this recipe down to my daughter. I can't seem to ever make enough or make them fast enough in the kitchen. We seem to eat them up as fast as I make them. I miss my grandmother soooo much. She was the cutest lady. Thanks for letting me take a minute to think of her. ciao4now64@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome! Thankfully, I still have one of my grandmas, but I lost the other one seven months ago. It is hard. I should have shared more about mine, but it's still kind of hard. Thanks for sharing about yours!
ReplyDeleteMy Mammaw always made tea cakes when I was little and still does now. They are the best and the dough, which she always let us taste, is better than the cookies. Even though she gave me the recipe, mine never come out as good as hers.
ReplyDeleteMy grandma made the best vegetable soup and canned it. I could've more excited when she'd send me home with a jar to make for dinner! I miss her so much, AND that wonderful soup!
ReplyDeleteI loved when my grandmother made funeral potatoes. Yummy.

my grandmother was the best southern cook ever....fried chicken, pound cake, apple nut cake (if my grandfather was eating no nuts, because they got caught in his dentures) she never used a recipe...amazing.

My Grandma always added a pinch of love to all that she made/did. I remember making Sunday Communion Calls after Mass with her and Grandpa. Usually I stayed Saturday at their house. On Sunday we'd go to Mass the go on Communion Calls. It was so much fun. I remember eating her chocolate chip cookies...always been one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI love and miss you Grandma!
That looks like an awesome book! My grama is like a mother to me, and we have lots of great memories, but one of the top ones is her teaching me to sew on her ancient Singer. She's also taught me most of the things I love to do: sewing, baking, cooking, crafting and gardening.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cookbook. My nana taught me how to cook when I was a girl. I remember making pound cakes and she would make the sweetest lemon or orange icing to drizzle over it. Yum!

ReplyDeleteOOh I loved making peanut butter cookies and divinity with my Gaga--my mom never could get the knack! And with my Nana--I loved it when she made homemade chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes--nothing better!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fantastic book! I never cooked with either of my grandmothers and sadly they died while I was young so I sadly don't remember them much. I do remember going to my Aunts for homemade food. I just had my dad and we tended to live on frozen pot pies and TV dinners so my first taste with homemade food was with my aunt and she gave me my first recipes!
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway and it sounds like an awesome cookbook. I've been a cookbook fiend lately and have been collecting a lot of them!
thanks for letting me enter! i follow!
ReplyDeleteEvery year my grandmother and I would do a cookie bake off for Christmas. Every year we would make dozens of cookies and cupcakes. My all time favorite with her were snickerdoodles and when we made black bottom muffins. I'm hoping this will be a tradition with my children and grandchildren some day!
ReplyDeleteI love cookbooks!! I am a transplant to the south and true southern recipes. My husband gets so excited when I find one and they turn out. Oh, and his favorite cake is Red Velvet so you see I really need this book! Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower.
Wow...my gma's homemade rolls! I love making them for my family today and each and every time I am reminded of her and Thanksgiving rolls!
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower and can't wait to see if I win!
Thanks for the giveaway
I love Southern cooking!! We were blessed to live in the South for 5 years and I can't wait to go back. No Grandma story though, they both passed before I was born.. Hoping to make some good memories for my future grandkids someday though :)
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I was not blessed to grow up around either of my grandmas as they both lived so far away. I did however at one point get to sample one grandmother's ginger snaps. She made *the* best ones I have ever had! A soft yummy yummy cookie! I wish she had left her recipes behind for her family. Every time I have a ginger snap I think of her & think to myself...it's not as good as your was grandma!
Thank you for the opportunity to win in this giveaway!
